Did Your Dentist Refer You to a Specialist for Your Dentures?

dentures survey

In a recent survey, we asked dentists whether they refer their patients to a prosthodontist for dentures or denture repairs. A prosthodontist is a dental specialist whose practice is limited to the restoration of the natural teeth and/or the replacement of missing teeth with artificial substitutes. The answers may surprise you!

Prosthodontics

Prosthodontics is one of the nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA).

A prosthodontist is a dentist who specializes in prosthodontics, the specialty of implant, esthetic and reconstructive dentistry. Prosthodontists specialize in the restoration of oral function by creating prostheses and restorations (i.e. complete dentures, crowns, implant retained/supported restorations, and denture repairs).

Implant Dentures

Dental implant dentures connect to implants that have been surgically implanted into the jawbone. Although the denture looks similar to a traditional prosthesis, the construction is modified to maintain a natural look while allowing for easy removal for cleaning.

Dental implant dentures require a two-step process. First is the surgical implant insertion stage and the attendant headling process. Second is the actual making of the implant denture and fitting into the patient's mouth.

What Are Partial Dentures?

A partial denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and adjacent tissues. Think "False Teeth". It is made of acrylic resin, sometimes in combination with various metals. A complete set of false teeth replace all the teeth, while a partial denture fills in the spaces created by missing teeth and prevents other teeth from changing position.
